Form 2290 Filing Without The Headache
Every heavy vehicle with a taxable gross weight of 55,000 pounds or more owes the federal Heavy Vehicle Use Tax (HVUT), reported on IRS Form 2290. Your stamped Schedule 1 is proof of payment, and you cannot renew registration without it.
Kunzler Consulting (KCI) prepares and files Form 2290 for your entire fleet, handles annual renewals, and returns your stamped Schedule 1 quickly. We track the filing period so your HVUT is never late and your registrations are never held up waiting on proof of payment.

Why The Schedule 1 Drives Everything Else
The stamped Schedule 1 is proof of payment, and state registration offices want to see it before they will register or renew a vehicle. That puts Form 2290 on the critical path for your plates. A late or rejected filing does not just create a tax problem, it stops a truck working.
The two errors we correct most often are the weight category and the VIN. Weight category is based on the maximum loaded weight the vehicle customarily runs at, not the empty weight, and getting it wrong means either underpaying or overpaying every year. A single mistyped VIN character produces a Schedule 1 that does not match the truck, and the correction cycle takes time you rarely have when a plate is waiting.
We also handle credits properly. Vehicles sold, destroyed or stolen during the year are claimable, and those claims do not make themselves.
Form 2290 & HVUT Filing FAQ
When is Form 2290 due?
The HVUT tax period runs July 1 through June 30. For vehicles in service at the start of the period, Form 2290 is generally due by August 31. For newly acquired vehicles, it is due by the last day of the month following the month of first use. KCI tracks these dates for you.
Which vehicles owe the Heavy Vehicle Use Tax?
Highway motor vehicles with a taxable gross weight of 55,000 pounds or more are subject to HVUT. The tax amount increases with weight up to 75,000 pounds and over. We calculate the correct tax for each vehicle in your fleet.
Why do I need a stamped Schedule 1?
A stamped (or e-filed watermarked) Schedule 1 is your proof of HVUT payment. States require it to register or renew heavy vehicles, so a delayed 2290 can hold up your plates. We return yours promptly.
Can you file 2290 for trucks we add during the year?
Yes. When you put a new taxable vehicle into service, we file a partial-period 2290 for it based on its first-use month so it stays compliant and registrable.
